Character Letters

Privacy

Effective October 30, 2026.

This notice explains what happens to what you type and what we collect.

Your letter stays on your device

Everything you write is saved in this browser on this device, so you can come back to it. It is never sent to our server, and we can’t read it. To remove it, use “Delete this letter” or “Delete everything on this device” on the letter page, or clear this site’s data in your browser.

What we count

We count visits and a few steps, such as starting a letter and opening the finished letter, as daily totals. When someone presses a download button while downloads aren’t open, we record the time, which button and the country our host reports. We never record names, letter text, case details or IP addresses.

If you leave your email

If you leave your email to hear when downloads open, we keep it apart from everything else, send you one email, and then delete your address. If downloads haven’t opened within 12 months, we delete your address then.

What our host sees

Cloudflare hosts this site. Like any web host, Cloudflare handles your IP address and browser details to deliver each page and to block attacks, under Cloudflare’s own privacy policy. We don’t store IP addresses. To stop people flooding the email form, we keep a one-way code made from your connection’s address for up to an hour, and then it’s deleted.

Bot checks

When you start to leave your email on the download screen, the page loads Cloudflare Turnstile to tell people from scripts. To make that check, Cloudflare processes your IP address and details of your browser. Cloudflare does this for us, and also uses those details to improve Turnstile. Cloudflare’s Turnstile privacy addendum explains this.

Who we share with

We never sell your information or use it for advertising. We share it only with Cloudflare, which hosts the site and runs the bot check, and, once downloads open, with an email service that sends the one email to the people who asked for it. No other company collects information about what you do on this site.

Do Not Track

We don’t track you across other websites, and we don’t use advertising or analytics cookies, so we treat every visit the same way whether or not your browser sends a Do Not Track signal.

Spelling suggestions

Some browsers offer an enhanced spell check that sends what you type to Google or Microsoft. If yours does, you can turn it off in the browser’s settings while you write.

Letters in court files

Letters given to a court or a board can end up in files other people read. Leave out Social Security and account numbers, full birth dates and children’s full names. Use a child’s initials instead.

On a shared computer

Your letter stays in this browser until you delete it. On the letter page, “Delete everything on this device” removes every letter.

Children

This site is for adults. We don’t knowingly collect any information from children under 13. If a child has left an email address with us, write to hello@characterletters.com and we’ll delete it.

Changes to this notice

If we change this notice, we’ll post the new version here and change the date at the top. We won’t use an email you already left in a new way without asking you first.

Questions or requests

To ask about your information or to have your email deleted sooner, write to hello@characterletters.com.
