Character Letters

Terms

Effective October 30, 2026.

What Character Letters is

Character Letters is not a law firm and does not give legal advice. This tool is not a substitute for the advice of an attorney, and using it doesn’t create an attorney-client relationship. Talk to the lawyer handling the case before you send any letter.

Agreeing to these terms

By ticking the box on the “Before you start” screen, or by using this site in any other way, you agree to these terms. If you don’t agree, please don’t use the site.

Who can use it

You must be 18 or over. Character Letters isn’t offered in North Carolina or Missouri. Visitors there can read the guides but can’t use the writing tool. If you need help with a letter to the court, ask the lawyer handling the case or a local lawyer.

General information, not advice about your case

The guides, questions, examples and the check are general information about writing a letter. They don’t take account of the facts of the case, the court’s rules or the law where you live, and they may be out of date or wrong for your situation. The check looks for certain words and phrases. It can miss problems, and it can flag a line that is fine. Only the lawyer handling the case can tell you what a letter should say for that case, or whether to send one at all.

Your words, your responsibility

You write the letter and you sign it. Everything in it must be true and within your own knowledge. You decide whether to send it, and you’re responsible for what it says, for getting it to the right person and for meeting any deadline or court rule. If you add the statement under penalty of perjury to an immigration letter, a false statement in the letter is a federal crime. Leave out other people’s private details, such as Social Security numbers and children’s full names.

What we don’t do

We don’t contact courts, judges, parole boards, prosecutors or anyone involved in a case, and we don’t file or send anything for you.

How you may use the site

Don’t use the site to write a letter you know is false, or to threaten or harass anyone. Don’t send your letter to a victim, a witness or anyone else in the case; a court order may forbid contact by you or by the person your letter is about, even through someone else. Don’t try to break or overload the site.

Your letter is kept only on your device

Your letter is saved in your browser and never reaches us, so we can’t recover it. If you clear your browser’s data or lose the device, the letter is gone. Keep your own copy of anything you need.

Downloads

Writing and checking your letter cost nothing. Downloads aren’t open yet. When they open, the price is shown before you pay, and these terms will say how refunds work.

No promises about results

WE PROVIDE THE SITE “AS IS” AND “AS AVAILABLE”, WITHOUT WARRANTIES OF ANY KIND, INCLUDING ANY IMPLIED WARRANTY OF MERCHANTABILITY OR FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE. We don’t promise that the site will always work or be free of mistakes, that a court or board will accept or read any letter, or that a letter will change the outcome of any case.

Limits on our liability

We aren’t liable for any indirect or consequential loss, or for the outcome of any case or hearing. Our total liability to you for any claim about the site is limited to the greater of $50 and the amount you paid us in the 12 months before the claim. These limits apply only as far as the law of the state where you live allows, and they don’t cover our own fraud, gross negligence or willful misconduct, or any injury to a person. If you live in New Jersey, these limits and the “No promises about results” section apply only as far as New Jersey law allows, and nothing in these terms limits your rights under the New Jersey Consumer Fraud Act.

Governing law

These terms are governed by the law of the State of Illinois, without regard to its rules on conflicts of law.

Changes to these terms

If we change these terms, we’ll post the new version here and change the date at the top. Changes apply from that date and don’t reach back to anything you did before it.
